Sounds good, until there is a leak. How would it be paid for? And at what rates?

There are already several geo-thermal power plants in Southern California. It helps to be located near fault lines. ;-)

Geothermal works as long as there are no more earthquakes. Ever...

If we can suck some heat out of the core or the devil's lair, we might solve the global warming problem.

Never could understand why it took so long to look to the use of geothermal energy. But better late than never.

BCweatherman, unless you live near an active volcano or hot springs, heat pumps are different from true geothermal. Yes, there may be problems with some heat pumps, which transfer heat/cold from one area to another and are sometimes misrepresented as being "geothermal".
However, geothermal uses volcanic and other internal earth heat sources which are described in the article.
Geothermal has a place as a renewable energy source and it is just one source that should be researched and developed.

My neighbor has a geothermal heat pump and we compare our utility costs for the past 7 years. I think he needs another 25 years before he breaks even with me. He also has pump problems and is on his third hot water tank that is connected to the heat pump. Beware before you buy, especially since electricity rates are jumping up.

Conventional unit of what? Natural gas prices compared to electric prices can make a geothermal heat sink more expensive. The geotherm energy cited by the article is for deep wells in select parts of the world (e.g. geysers area of California) while geothermal heat pumps use the relative constant temperature of the soil / water table to serve as a heat sink for an electric heat pump. My dad has one in NC that has been operating for the past 27 years.

Hmm, wonder why my neighbors took theirs out....and put in a conventional unit?? They were disappointed...cost too much. Used it 15 years. So Beware!
