Yes, there may be problems with some heat pumps, which transfer heat/cold from one area to another and are sometimes misrepresented as being "geothermal". However, geothermal uses volcanic and other internal earth heat sources which are described in the article. Geothermal has a place as a renewable energy source and it is just one source that should be researched and developed.

I think he needs another 25 years before he breaks even with me. He also has pump problems and is on his third hot water tank that is connected to the heat pump. Beware before you buy, especially since electricity rates are jumping up.

Natural gas prices compared to electric prices can make a geothermal heat sink more expensive. The geotherm energy cited by the article is for deep wells in select parts of the world (e.g. geysers area of California) while geothermal heat pumps use the relative constant temperature of the soil / water table to serve as a heat sink for an electric heat pump. My dad has one in NC that has been operating for the past 27 years.
